London pharmacies alerted to Nurofen Plus product tampering

Reckitt Benckiser has written to pharmacies in the London area urging vigilance after receiving a number of complaints about tampering incidents involving Nurofen Plus.

Consumers have reported purchasing packs which have been found to have tablets removed from the blister packs, and various items (such as screws) used to maintain the pack weight. The anti-tamper device has been resealed with Sellotape, the letter says.

“From reports received so far and from CCTV footage … the tampering is being undertaken by either the same or certain individuals pretending to be genuine patients. They attempt payment with a card transaction which fails and during this process they switch the box on the counter with a tampered packet from their bag. They then leave the store due to not being able to proceed with the purchase.”

Pharmacies are asked to be extra vigilant when selling Nurofen Plus, not to place packs within easy reach of the customer until full payment has been received, and to check the tamper evident seal has not been broken/resealed.

Pharmacies that receive any complaint of a tampered Nurofen Plus pack are urged to report it to consumerhealth.gb@reckitt.com, and to retain and post the product to: RB Consumer Relations, PO Box 4044, Slough, Berks SL1 ONS.

Reckitt says that as this is classified as commercial retail fraud, any complaint of tampered Nurofen packs should be reported to the National Fraud Office (tel: 0300123300) quoting crime reference number NFRC240706750573.
